Dreamers Thrive empowers students to explore the world through international education. In this inspiring series, we spotlight current and former Latino students who have studied abroad, sharing their journeys to motivate youth to pursue educational opportunities beyond the U.S. borders.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m from Long Beach, California, and I’m a first-generation student from a family of Mexican immigrants. I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Paris, France, and South Korea! I chose to study in Paris because I had learned French in high school and I chose to study in South Korea because I got the chance to become an English instructor there!
2. Share some of the biggest challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was the culture shock when I arrived in Korea. Even simple daily routines, like handing things to people or using public transportation, felt unfamiliar. With patience and an open mind, I immersed myself in the culture and truly enjoyed learning about their way of life.
3. How did studying abroad impact your identity as a Latino?
Studying abroad deepened my pride in my own culture and heritage but it also broadened my perspective and opened my mind to appreciating other cultures.
4. Describe a memorable experience or moment that you’ll never forget.
When I was studying in South Korea, I became friends with a group of students from my study abroad program, many of whom were local Koreans. Some of my most cherished memories are of them taking us to cafes or restaurants, where we got to exchange stories and learn about each other’s cultures. We were all so curious and excited to share our experiences, and doing this over delicious cultural dishes made it even more special. These moments will always hold a special place in my heart.
5. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to Latino students considering studying abroad?
Just do it! It can feel nerve-racking to leave your comfort zone and study in another country, but it’s a life-changing experience. Don’t stress about the timing even if it delays your graduation a bit, it’s worth it. And if finances are a concern, don’t give up! There are so many scholarships and resources available to help you make studying abroad a reality.
6. How did studying abroad influence your future plans or goals?
It inspired me to encourage other minority students to study abroad. As a recent graduate, I’m now focused on my career, but traveling and experiencing new cultures will always be an essential part of my future plan because of my experiences abroad!
7. Anything else you want to share?
Since you’re young and in school, now is the best time to travel and study abroad! I’ve made such close friends abroad and created memories that I’ll treasure forever i would definitely recommend every college student to study abroad at least once in your college career!
